Geometric constructions

Properties of figures

Japanese school year: Math A

What you learn

Learn construction techniques based on geometric theorems, such as dividing segments proportionally, constructing square root lengths, and drawing circle tangents. This topic combines basic straightedge and compass methods with properties of similarity and inscribed angles. It is widely utilized in architectural drafting and geometric investigation.

Key points

This construction divides a line segment into any given ratio (such as 2:32:3) using a straightedge and compass. Mark equal steps along an angled ray and draw parallel lines to divide the segment.

This method constructs a length x=abx = \sqrt{ab} (the geometric mean) from lengths aa and bb. Draw a semicircle on diameter a+ba+b; the perpendicular length xx erected from their junction equals ab\sqrt{ab}.

x=abx = \sqrt{ab}

This method constructs tangent lines from an external point PP to a circle centered at OO. Draw a circle on diameter OPOP; connecting PP to the intersection points forms right angles (90∘90^\circ), creating the tangents.
