Japanese school year: Elementary 5

What you learn

You will explore how to convert fractions into decimals and whole numbers, as well as rewrite decimals as fractions. This skill is valuable for comparing quantities given in different formats and simplifying complex calculations. A solid grasp of division and decimal place values is recommended.

Key points

Use this formula to convert a fraction to a decimal or whole number. The fraction ab\frac{a}{b} represents the division a÷ba \div b, so dividing numerator aa by denominator bb gives the value.

ab=a÷b\frac{a}{b} = a \div b

This formula shows how to express any integer as a fraction. Any integer aa can be written as fraction a1\frac{a}{1} with denominator 11, fitting directly into fraction calculations.

a=a1a = \frac{a}{1}

Use this procedure to convert decimals to fractions. Express numbers with one decimal place over 1010 and two decimal places over 100100, then simplify to lowest terms.

This shows how fractions express values that cannot be divided evenly. A division like 1÷31 \div 3 cannot be written as a finite decimal, but fraction 13\frac{1}{3} represents its exact value.
