Division with times tables

Division

Japanese school year: Elementary 3

What you learn

Students learn fundamental division concepts, such as equal sharing and grouping, by working backwards from multiplication tables. This skill is commonly used when distributing items equally among friends or groups. Solid mastery of multiplication tables is an essential prerequisite that allows learners to solve these problems smoothly.

Key points

To find answer c in a ÷ b, ask what number times divisor b equals dividend a.

a÷b=c  ⟺  b×c=aa \div b = c \iff b \times c = a

Dividing any non-zero number a by itself always gives 1. Use this when sharing equally.

a÷a=1(a≠0)a \div a = 1 \quad (a \neq 0)

Dividing any number a by 1 leaves the answer as a. Use this when dividing into 1 share.

a÷1=aa \div 1 = a

Zero divided by any non-zero number a is always 0. Remember you cannot divide by 0.

0÷a=0(a≠0)0 \div a = 0 \quad (a \neq 0)
